Children Coping With War
With war on TV, in the newspaper and the main topic of discussion, our
young children are picking up on the seriousness of this new conflict in
the world. Many are affected because someone they know is over in
the Middle East. For many, this means their secure world has
disappeared and they really don't understand why. Here are some ways
in which to help children cope:
- Give reassurance and physical comfort.
- Be aware of separation issues.
- Provide structure throughout the day and set limits.
- Welcome children's talking about the situation.
- Make opportunities for children to write or dictate stories and
create pictures about their experience.
- Read books.
- Give children more time for the relaxing, therapeutic experience of
playing with sand, water, clay, and play dough.
- Provide plenty of time and opportunity for children to work out
their concerns and feelings through dramatic play.
- Spend more time in settings that give children opportunities for
physical activity and that provide emotional release.
- Model peaceful resolution to conflict.
