Lion/Smart Start Team up
Smart Start and Food Lion have teamed up to teach young
children about the do's and don'ts of food safety.
Approximately 50 Food Lion Food Safety Kits were distributed free of charge
to child care homes in Burke County through Child Care Connections and Burke
County Partnership for Children. The kit includes lessons and activities to
encourage children to wash their hands before and after eating, ways to
properly wash fruits and vegetables, and proper food temperatures and
storage. The kit also includes coupons for free carrots and resources for
parents. This is the third year Food Lion has distributed the kit.

"Food Lion is a strong supporter of education and youth. Our Food
Safety Kit provides the company with the unique opportunity of supporting
both of these efforts while helping children learn valuable information in
the area that affects our core business…food," said James Ball,
Director of Food Safety.
Food Lion is one of Smart Start's earliest and largest donors, having
contributed $1 million to Smart Start, in addition to in-kind contributions
like the Food Safety Kit
