In counties across North Carolina, educators and children's advocates
are recruiting children who most need help before they start
kindergarten--low-income children who aren't in preschool or child
care. Children who qualify will spend the rest of the school year
in state and county funded More at Four classes building skills
for school success, at no cost to their parents. In Burke County, More at Four is a collaborative effort
between Smart Start and Burke County Public Schools, and Head Start. Burke County's
first More at Four classroom
opened on September 30th, 2002, at Hildebran Elementary School.
Other MAF classrooms are now open at Glen Alpine Elementary,
George Hildebrand Elementary, Chesterfield Elementary, and Head
Start. A total of 98 children are receiving services.
To learn whether your child is eligible and to apply for the
2003-2004 school year, please contact Susan Wilson, Burke County Public
Schools, at 430-4100, or Tammy Roper, Head Start, at 438-6255, extension
208. Children must be four years old by October 16th, 2003.
